Patient Referral Form
Refer a patient for TMS, and follow the assessment and treatment pathway.
TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a validated, non-invasive treatment for resistant depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and functional pain disorders, using precisely targeted magnetic pulses to modulate specific brain networks. It is medication free, requires no anaesthetic, and patients can drive themselves home afterwards.
Sessions are run on weekdays and take roughly 3 to 40 minutes depending on the protocol. Most treatment courses are in the region of R44 000 for the full course (approximately R800 per session, depending on the protocol), and our team is happy to help patients motivate to their medical aid for funding.
What to expect
The treatment pathway
- You complete the referral form below, and Rewire contacts the patient to arrange an assessment.
- An assessment session with a Rewire psychiatrist, charged at standard medical-aid rates, confirms suitability.
- A calibration session (up to an hour) establishes the individual treatment parameters.
- The early treatment sessions begin. We recommend the referring clinician reviews the patient at around two weeks.
- Treatment continues through the middle of the course.
- An efficacy assessment reviews progress and adjusts the plan if needed.
- The remaining sessions complete the course.
- Feedback is sent back to you, the referring clinician.
Clinical notes
Important points for referrers
- Review at ~2 weeks. Please review the patient around two weeks after initiating treatment. As with starting antidepressants, there is a small risk of increased suicidality or a manic switch.
- Medication changes. Medication changes can affect seizure thresholds. Where possible, please avoid changing medication during the TMS course. For any medication queries, contact drm@rewire.co.za.
- Continuity of care. To avoid any transference concerns, Dr Stastny does not take on referred TMS patients into her own private practice for a year following referral.
